LGBT network groups have the power to support systemic change within an organisation. The greatest impact comes from networks that value the diversity of ideas, expertise and experience of their members and seek to create spaces where the most marginalised and underrepresented voices within our community experience true inclusion.
However, too often marginalised communities do not feel welcome in LGBT spaces. Stonewall’s LGBT in Britain: Home and Communities Report shows that the wealth of different identities within the LGBT community is not fully represented:
- Half of black, Asian and minority ethnic LGBT people (51 per cent) have experienced discrimination or poor treatment from others in their local LGBT community because of their ethnicity. This number rises to three in five black LGBT people (61 per cent).
- One in four LGBT disabled people (26 per cent) whose activities are ‘limited a lot’ because of a health problem or disability have experienced discrimination or poor treatment in their local LGBT community because of being disabled.
- One in eight LGBT people of faith (12 per cent) have experienced discrimination and poor treatment from other LGBT people in their local LGBT community because of their faith.
Achieving a fully inclusive network should be a shared responsibility, with everyone in your network having a role to play. This series of two digital sessions will give you the knowledge and tools you need to create inclusive LGBT network spaces.
Session One: Stepping Up – Understanding your role in inclusive networks
- Date: Tuesday 23 February 2021
- Time: 10:00 to 12:00
- Develop an understanding of intersectional LGBT identities and experiences in order to confidently advocate for more inclusive networks
- Explore meaningful allyship to marginalised individuals and identify first steps that you can take to be a more active and visible ally
- Hear from others and discuss the practical steps you can take to shape a network group which allows everyone to be themselves
Session Two: Creating Inclusive LGBT Networks
- Date: Thursday 25 February 2021
- Time: 14:00 to 16:00
- Understand mechanisms to ensure that network group activities are accessible and inclusive of employees who experience multiple marginalisation in LGBT spaces
- Learn about structures and strategies that encourage and maintain high participation for all employees within your organisation.
- Explore ways to develop and sustain effective network activities in an increasingly digital environment
